Solar Panel Cleaning and Maintenance

Solar panels are systems capable of generating clean, renewable, and sustainable energy by harnessing sunlight. However, in order to operate efficiently, they require regular cleaning and maintenance to counteract the negative effects of external factors. Over time, elements such as dust, dirt, pollen, bird droppings, and air pollution can accumulate on the panel surfaces, blocking sunlight from reaching the cells.

This buildup negatively affects the panel’s energy conversion performance and can reduce overall energy output. Solar panels located in industrial zones, agricultural areas, or near high-traffic regions tend to get dirty more quickly and may require more frequent cleaning.

Therefore, regular cleaning is essential to maintain high efficiency and ensure the system’s long operational life.

The Importance of Regular Cleaning for Solar Power Plants (PV Systems)

Regular cleaning of solar power plants (PV systems) plays a critical role in maximizing energy production efficiency. Studies have shown that uncleaned panels can suffer annual energy losses ranging from 15% to 25%. To prevent such losses, cleaning must be carried out professionally and using appropriate methods.

During cleaning, the use of chemical cleaners, hard brushes, or high-pressure water should be strictly avoided, as these can damage the panels. Chemical substances may deteriorate the panel surface, impair its reflective properties, and reduce efficiency. Likewise, high-pressure water may cause microcracks in the glass surface, potentially leading to severe long-term failures.

Instead, deionized pure water should be used, which ensures effective cleaning without leaving chemical residues.

Additionally, stepping on the panels must be avoided during the cleaning process, as it can cause microcracks and structural damage. Given the delicate nature of solar panels, cleaning should always be carried out using specialized equipment and safe access methods.

Professional cleaning and maintenance extend the lifespan of solar panels and optimize the return on investment. Prioritizing regular care and maintenance is one of the most vital steps for ensuring long-term sustainability in energy production—both for individual users and large-scale solar power facilities.
